Travelling for 30 hours to the other side of the planet for a comedy festival guarantees you’ll see some acts you’ve never heard of or seen before. One of the greatest joys however is watching one of your favourite local comedians absolutely crush more than 10,000 miles from home.
This spring, I attended the 2017 Melbourne International Comedy Festival and watched one of my favourites, Canadian/American comedian and gentleman elf Deanne Smith, knock it right out of the park. On top of selling out shows throughout the festival, Smith was one of the standouts of the Melbourne International Comedy Festival Oxfam Gala, giving straight Aussie cis-men some desperately needed dating advice.
Smith also made a splash beyond her solo show Deanne Smith: Post-Joke Era, hosting an episode of Comedy Up Late for ABC1. Perhaps the greatest visual gag of the festival was Smith’s collaboration with Australian national treasure and Barry Award winner Hannah Gadsby for the annual Great Debate moderated by Steven K. Amos.
Deanne Smith had no shortage of stand-out material at this year’s Melbourne International Comedy Festival, from the best mic-drop in the festival’s history to my absolute favourite piece of merchandise, Smith’s pro-consent version of the staple bro wardrobe piece, a “Rock Out with Your Cock Out” t-shirt, merchandise I can only hope she brings back home to Toronto along with her legion of Aussie fans.
